The Results Are In: Should Pastors Serve on the Board?

Hello Reader ,

Last week, we asked a simple—but important—question:

Should the pastor serve on the church board?

The responses were nearly split:
54% said yes
45% said no

So… what’s the right answer?

As is often the case with church governance—it’s a bit more nuanced.

In many situations, there’s no prohibition against a pastor serving on the board. In fact, some states specifically recommend it. At the same time, there are important safeguards to consider—especially when it comes to compensation and potential conflicts of interest.

This is why understanding proper board structure, roles, and responsibilities is so critical for protecting your church.

In our upcoming webinar on April 14th, I’ll walk through:

  • When a pastor should (and shouldn’t) be on the board
  • Key governance principles every church needs to understand
  • Common mistakes that can create legal and leadership challenges

If you want clarity and confidence in how your church is governed, I’d love for you to join us.

We hope to see you in the Zoom room soon!!

Blessings!

Hello Reader , When it comes to church finances, most leaders would say they have oversight in place. There’s a board. There are trusted individuals involved.
